VICTIMS
OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR AND FRANCO’S DICTATORSHIP
DESERVE ANSWERS NOW ! |
The
victims of human rights crimes committed by the Franco regime
during the Spanish Civil War - crimes that violated International
Law - have the right to know the truth, to obtain justice
and to receive reparations for the damages they suffered.
In 2006, on the 70th anniversary of the start of the Spanish
Civil War, the victims still have no answer.
The remains of tens of thousands of people are still in secret
mass graves or in places unbeknownst to their closest relatives.
The family members of those who were sentenced to death and
executed as a result of unjust trials have never been able
to overturn these unfair sentences. The official documents
which could establish the truth of what actually happened,
are kept in numerous files spread throughout Spain that are
difficult to access and, in some cases, run the risk of disappearing.

| In
spite of the creation of an Inter-Ministerial Commission and
the promise of President Rodríguez Zapatero to make
this matter a priority, there has been no significant progress
after two years of work. The basic human rights of these victims
continue to be denied.
